Medical doctor David Walcott was yesterday chosen as the recipient of the Jamaica Rhodes Scholarship for 2010 from a field of eight finalists of the highest quality, selection committee members said.

Dr Walcott, a graduate of the University of the West Indies, will study at the prestigious Oxford University in the United Kingdom and is the eighth consecutive Rhodes scholar from Campion College, the country's leading high school in academic performance.

Governor General Sir Patrick Allen, in announcing the award at King's House, said it was a difficult decision to choose Dr Walcott who won from a field of "very, very strong candidates". Dr Walcott replied that he was "extremely honoured" in winning the scholarship and thanked his family, fellow candidates and also his teachers for "moulding me throughout all these years and for giving me a sense of empowerment".
