Dear Rhodes Scholar,

The Association of American Rhodes Scholars invites you and your spouse or guest to a reception of Midwestern Rhodes Scholars on November 7.

In addition to meeting old and new friends, the gathering will feature what should prove a fascinating and timely talk by Supreme Court scholar Dennis Hutchinson (Colorado and Magdalen '70; William Rainey Harper Professor in the College and Senior Lecturer in Law, University of Chicago):

The Supreme Court Post-Bush v. Gore: Federalism, War, and Fundamental Freedoms

The Supreme Court spent substantial political capital in a political case - Bush v. Gore - but their performance since then appears largely to be unaffected by the controversy following the decision. Now, they face both old issues - abortion, affirmative action, and freedom of speech - plus new questions arising from the war on terrorism. How the Court will perform during the new October 2002 Term, plus growing questions about the Senate's oversight power on judicial nominations, provide the agenda for this conversation with Prof. Hutchinson, who teaches at the University of Chicago and edits the Supreme Court Review. His most recent book is The Forgotten Memoir of John Knox (University of Chicago Press, 2002).
The talk will be followed by a short response and questions from those attending. We will be joined by local members of the AARS Board of Direction, including president John Morrison.

Dress is business casual for the reception and the optional dinner afterwards. The cost of the evening will be $40 per person (including drinks, hors d’oeuvre, tips, tax). Please send a check, made payable to AARS, to Suite 240, 8229 Boone Blvd, Vienna VA 22182. (If you wish to stay for the optional dinner, cost will be an additional $50-$60 per person payable by cash or check at the Mid-America Club.)

Please reply to this invitation as soon as possible (at the e-mail or telephone number above). We hope you can join us!

With best wishes,

Nicholas Ulanov (New Jersey and Exeter '79)
Chairman, AARS Reunions and Events Committee
