Mark Williams

(Kansas and New College '73)

Dear Oxford Friends:

It is with a heavy heart that we write to let you know that our friend and classmate Mark Williams died at home in Austin this weekend from complications of bile duct cancer, with which he was diagnosed within the last year.  All of us remember Mark’s energy, wit and brilliance—and he will be sorely missed.  With a PhD in Physics, he was tempted to academia but ultimately pursued a career in business, rising to the very top echelon of Royal Dutch Shell, with which he remained throughout his career.  Then, in “retirement”, he became Chairman of Hess Oil Company.  All of this while married to Candace, his wife of close to 42 years, and raising a wonderful family.  Mike, Betsy and I had the pleasure of visiting him in Austin in October, when his illness prevented him from coming again to Alabama to serve on the Rhodes Scholarship selection committee for the southeast.

We do not know of any arrangements at this time.  The family home address is:
4004 Harbor Light Cove
Austin, TX 78731

Please share any remembrances, which Mike and I will try to include in the obituary we plan to write for The American Oxonian.  Please send to:
