A message from the Chairman of the Board

It is my distinct pleasure to announce that Dr. Christopher B. Howard was elected as the 24th President of Hampden-Sydney College at a special called meeting of the Board of Trustees on December 19, 2008.  Dr. Howard was chosen from a pool of 100 candidates that included sitting college presidents, vice presidents, deans, and leaders from other walks of life: attorneys, physicians, and business leaders.  This outstanding pool was due in large measure to the stellar work that Walter Bortz has done during his nine years at the helm.  All of us associated with the College owe Dr. Bortz a great debt of gratitude.

In the upcoming months you will have a chance to meet Dr. Howard and will quickly realize why the Board of Trustees elected him.  The person who brought Dr. Howard to our attention noted his “keen intellect and extraordinary breadth of talents” adding that “he would be a superb candidate to lead a small, high quality, all-male institution such as Hampden-Sydney.”  I could not agree more.

Chris Howard was graduated in 1991 from the U.S. Air Force Academy.  He subsequently studied at Oxford University in England as a Rhodes Scholar, eventually earning a Master's of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.  He then earned a Master's in Business Administration from Harvard University.

Dr. Howard brings leadership experience in the military, business, and higher education to his new role.  I know I speak on behalf of all the Trustees in expressing my excitement in anticipation of his assuming the presidency in July 2009.

I hope you will join me in welcoming Chris and Barbara Howard and their sons, Cohen and Joshua, to the Hampden-Sydney College family.

Sincerely,
