Student from Westwood wins prestigious Rhodes Scholarship

When her name was announced as a Rhodes Scholar, Laura Nelson says she was stunned into silence.

“I wasn’t sure I heard right,” she confesses.

Her ears, it turns out, are just fine.

Her name was indeed called and Nelson, of Westwood, will be heading to Oxford, England next year as a Rhodes Scholar, an honor afforded only 32 U.S. college students each year.

She immediately phoned her mother with the news, but decided to let her father know in person.

“I asked my mom not to tell him and then I walked into the house with a sad look on my face. He immediately got up to give me a hug and I surprised him,” she said.

The 22 year-old calls winning an honor and her competition impressive.
