Lanham becomes Rhodes Scholar

WOOSTER -- A class of 2006 Wooster High School alumnus who graduated from Haverford College this year probably never expected to be quizzed about Big Bird on his way to Oxford.

But the children's program character did come up in conversation when Andrew Lanham faced an intimidating interrogation by a panel of influential examiners in an intensive interview to become a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford next fall.

Lanham was questioned whether the Public Broadcasting Station should be divided into two partisan channels.

Thinking quickly and effectively, Lanham countered, whether the program is Sesame Street or Nova, the objective is to make "a body of knowledge available to the public."

"I am not in favor of giving Big Bird a split personality," Lanham said.
