Karl Marlante's "What It Is to Go to War" To Be Released

Last year, Karl Marlante's powerhouse Vietnam war novel Matterhorn was praised for its authenticity and gut-wrenching battle scenes. This Fall, Marlante moves from the fiction genre to non-fiction with the publication of What It Is Like to Go to War (Grove/Atlantic, $25). On sale date: Aug. 30.

A graduate of Yale University and a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, Marlante began writing What It Is to Go to War, about the combat experience, while writing the award-winning Matterhorn. He served as a Marine in Vietnam and was the recipient of the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, and 10 air medals.
