As a troubled youth, Wes Moore acted out, got bad grades and attempted to escape from military school four times.

Eventually, he went on to become a Rhodes Scholar, serve in the U.S. military and at the White House, and now is a New York Times best-selling author.

Moore, 32, credits his support system of family and mentors for turning his life around.

“Once I opened my hand out for help instead of having a clenched fist, that’s when things started to take a turn for the better,” he said.

Moore, who recently wrote “The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates,” will share his story Sunday as the keynote speaker at Starr Commonwealth’s Founder’s Day event in Albion.
