An engineering student is the 96th Rhodes Scholar to come from University of Manitoba.

Mark Hearson, in his fifth year of a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, is a Rhodes Scholar recipient for 2012.

U of M is the alma mater for more Rhodes Scholars than any other university in Western Canada.

Hearson is one of three students to receive the scholarship in the Prairie provinces. He has received leadership awards and is a public speaker and activist, in addition to his outstanding academic record.

His academic work has focused on devising innovative solutions to transporting people and goods around the world — a fascination of his that began with playing LEGO as a child, according to a U of M press release.
