Seven Yalies win Rhodes scholarships

If you’re wondering whether in-your-face political activism affects one’s chances of advancing in the establishment elite, here’s a data point for your consideration. Two years ago, David Carel '13 heckled President Barack Obama at a rally and was dubbed “a new style of AIDS activist.” Now Carel has been named a Rhodes Scholar.

Carel is one of seven Yalies—five students and two alumni—chosen by this year’s Rhodes judges. Six more winners are from Harvard. Throw in a few from Cornell and Brown, and the Ivy League produced fully half of the 32 scholars.
