Oak Ridge City Council recently paid tribute to one of Oak Ridge’s outstanding students — Lindsay E. Lee.

Lee was recently named a Rhodes Scholar and with that recognition, Council members honored her during its recent meeting. Her mother and father, Joe and Julie Lee, as well as several Oak Ridge teachers attended the meeting to support Lee and acknowledge her accomplishments.

Lee said she was surprised to receive the tribute from Council and attributed her successes to the city and state government for “supporting Oak Ridge schools, the schools administration staff for supporting teachers and the teachers for supporting students.”

Lee is currently attending the University of Tennessee and was among 32 U.S. men and women to be named Rhodes Scholars. She will enter Oxford University next October, where she plans to complete her master’s degree in philosophy in comparative social policy.

She was selected from 857 applicants endorsed by 327 colleges and universities.

The scholarships provide all expenses for two or three years of study at the prestigious university of England.

Lee, who has muscular dystrophy, is a passionate advocate for disability issues. While at Oak Ridge High School, she traveled with her history classmates to Gettysburg National Military Park and other historic sites in the Northeast, but when she was not able to access the site with her motorized wheelchair, her teacher, Ken Senter, contacted the office of then U.S. Congressman Zach Wamp. Senter was later notified the National Park Service had fixed the problem.
