Tayo Sanders is a first-generation college student and is now the second winner of the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship from UW-Eau Claire. Previous Rhodes Scholars include former President Bill Clinton and former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold.

A quick glance at Sanders’ Facebook page shows the range of his interests. There he is finishing a triathlon. There he is going snowboarding in Colorado. There he is wolfing down a three-pound hamburger in Milwaukee. And there he is getting nanoparticle research published in a Materials Letters journal.

Sanders, a senior majoring in materials science, was announced Sunday as one of 32 Americans named as 2015 Rhodes Scholars. He’s the second winner from his school — the first was Chauncy Harris in 2005 — and the only winner from Wisconsin this year.

UW-Eau Claire is the only University of Wisconsin System school to have a Rhodes winner other than the flagship UW-Madison, which has had 31 winners.
