Yale says starting forward Matt Townsend has been awarded a Rhodes scholarship.

The 6-foot-7 senior carries a 4.0 grade point average in molecular, cellular and developmental biology. He was one of eight Yale students selected as finalists for the prestigious Oxford University scholarships.

Townsend missed two games during the Men Against Breast Cancer Classic while in New York interviewing for the scholarship. The Bulldogs (3-1) won both games, and Townsend was expected to play Sunday against Kent State.

He averaged 7.7 points and 4 rebounds a game last season, and scored 14 points in Yale’s 97-51 win Monday over Newbury.

Townsend is the fourth Yale men’s basketball player to be named a Rhodes scholar, joining Robert McCallum (1968), Mike Oristaglio (1974) and James McGuire (1976).
